PlantArte Collaboration

Native Plant Pledge

Planta: plant
Plantar: to plant
Plantarte: to take a stand

Four of the 2024 PlantArte native plant art contest partner groups co-authored and/or endorsed this

native plant pledge aimed at promoting personal and community-based native plant advocacy.

Chapter leaders and board members of the Native Plant Society of Texas also helped

inform the pledge development process by voting on the pledge’s action steps.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the paramount threat to our wildlife and native habitats today is the fragmentation of our lands. As swathes of Texas rapidly transition from undeveloped ranches, fields, and forests into urban or semi-urban expanses, our native pollinators and flora are encountering unprecedented challenges.

As planetary stewards, we each hold a duty to not only mitigate this fragmentation but to actively protect our Earth. By fostering pockets of sanctuary or creating wildlife corridors within these fragmented landscapes, we can support vital life cycles of native pollinators and safeguard the rich diversity of our bioregions.

Our responsibility extends far beyond simple gardening; it's a profound commitment to land and water stewardship. It is up to us to ensure preservation and flourishing of our natural world for future generations. Through embracing a spectrum of native plant gardening practices, from cultivating small container plants on a balcony … to intentionally re-thinking our lawns and planting vast areas with native species, we can each contribute to a collective effort. This commitment to nurturing native plants and pollinators is a testament to our deeper dedication to the Earth, acting as custodians of its legacy and champions of its recovery.

I pledge to:

Learn more about the native plants in my region.

Plant some native plants in my outdoor space.

Add native host plants and pollinator favorites.

Learn about invasive plants and their native plant alternatives.

Avoid using pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers.
