Latino Conservation Week: September 12 - 20, 2026

We are partnering with Profauna Mexico's Programa Correo Real and Latino Outdoors chapters for a unique binational event that will be part of the 14th annual Latino Conservation Week.

The Plantas Nativas Sin Fronteras (without borders) week-long celebration of native plants that support pollinators and promote healthy habitats will take place in our three shared ecoregions* with México:

Chihuahuan Desert / Desierto de Chihuahua
Tamaulipas-Texas Semiarid Plain / Planicie semiárida de Tamaulipas y Texas
Western Gulf Coastal Plain / Llanura costera del Golfo

Small bilingual native plant e-guides of plants from the following Texas/ México transboundary ecoregions will be shared for use at local parks, demonstration gardens, or during walks and hikes.

* An ecoregion is a large area of land or water that shares similar climate, soils, geology, and plant and animal communities. It uses natural boundaries instead of political lines to help scientists study and protect the environment.

The ongoing militarization of the Texas-Mexico border region - with its interconnected river buoys, extensive multi-layered razor wire, steel bollard walls, and makeshift land blockades - has directly destroyed, fragmented, and degraded native plant and wildlife habitats by scraping away highly biodiverse ecosystems, altering vital river hydrology, paving the way for invasive species, and threatening critically endangered species by cutting off their natural corridors. Without these habitats, wildlife such as the Monarch butterfly and pollinators also lack the space needed for feeding or reproduction.
